![]() When the nonbinary community started to enter mainstream consciousness, the vast majority preferred "they/them" pronouns. I read a lot of scifi (mostly by cis writers) where genderless or third gender aliens were referred to with "ze" or "hir" or "ae" pronouns, but these systems didn't seem to resonate as much with humans. By the 0s, cis academics and activists were advocating for various neopronoun systems, or even for replacing standard English pronouns with neopronouns. Many of these systems were clunky, unnatural, difficult to pronounce in English, or sounded too similar to standard masculine/feminine pronouns. It's similar to the issue around neopronouns - throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, there were many attempts (by both queer and non-queer people) to create gender neutral English pronoun systems, but none of them really gained traction in the queer community. ![]() IIRC it was around in the Spanish-speaking American queer and feminist communities as early as the 90s, and it appeared in some academic publications, but it didn't really take off until the mid-2010s when it was adopted by non-Spanish-speaking activists and academics (along with other neologisms like But these days it seems like more Spanish-speaking nonbinary people prefer "latine." "Latinx" works as a statement of identity, but the -x suffix doesn't work for other gendered Spanish words in everyday speech.
