Since 1964, OHST’s holdings have been further supplemented beyond the AHQP material. It also holds many administrative and organizational papers from the project. As the physical home base of the Sources for the History of Quantum Physics (SHQP) project, Berkeley is one of the original repositories. The Office for History of Science and Technology (OHST) at the University of California, Berkeley, maintains a copy of the AHQP, including the additions since 1964. These materials constitute the original Archive for History of Quantum Physics (AHQP), whose primary home is the American Philosophical Society and whose copies are deposited in various locations around the world. In the years immediately after 1964, relevant additions were made to the holdings as opportunities presented themselves. With the cooperation of the physicists involved, these materials were assembled and microfilmed. Limiting their study to the years from 1898 to 1933, Kuhn and his colleagues had the further goal of discovering and preserving manuscript materials, i.e., letters, drafts of papers, laboratory notebooks, lecture notes, and so forth. Between 19, a wide-ranging project was carried out under the rubric “Sources for History of Quantum Physics.” A research committee composed of Thomas Kuhn, John Heilbron, Paul Forman, and Lini Allen interviewed nearly one hundred people involved in the development of quantum physics. ![]() ![]() ![]() Besides, if the selected iTunes backup file is encrypted, you should enter the password to unlock it. ![]() ![]() “It’s all about learning to relate to these thoughts differently,” Eckstein says. One common technique- exposure and response prevention-involves confronting these thoughts and allowing them to occur without feeling the need to perform a compulsive behavior. Research suggests that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective treatment option for intrusive thoughts, Eckstein says. ![]() It’s possible you could be dealing with OCD, a mood disorder, postpartum depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder. A mental-health professional can determine if they’re benign or if something more serious is going on, says Dr. If intrusive or impulsive thoughts are causing a great deal of distress or interfering with your ability to function, it’s time to seek help. As soon as we try to stop having them, we think about them more.” “And that’s a game you cannot win, because our thoughts are ubiquitous. They “get stuck in a tug-of-war with their intrusive thoughts,” Abramowitz says. That could jeopardize the person’s relationship with their child, while also making things more difficult for their partner, who’s suddenly tasked with handling all baby-related duties. Such concerns often afflict new parents, who might experience the intrusive thought that they could harm or inappropriately touch their baby-and then refuse to change the child’s diaper or otherwise interact with him. Most people would allow the thought to dissipate as quickly as it formed, but a person with OCD might assume it means they’re dangerous and shouldn’t drive, Abramowitz says. Say you’re driving down the road and suddenly wonder what would happen if you steered your car into a tree. They don’t regard them as passing notions-they take them literally. Some people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), in particular, tend to experience intrusive thoughts more intensely than others and have a harder time shaking them off. Still, some people become tormented by the possibility that their intrusive thoughts are true or will cause them to act in a certain way, and might begin performing compulsions in order to rid themselves of these thoughts-or alter their lives and routines entirely. “A true intrusive thought is simply a thought, and we can choose to act on it or not.” The majority of people do not-and these involuntary thoughts don’t capture their actual desires. “The reality is that our intrusive thoughts alone can’t compel us to engage in a behavior that we don’t want to do,” she says. But the idea that these thoughts are linked with behavior is a big misconception, Beadel notes. Many TikTok videos about intrusive thoughts make it seem like people have no choice but to give in to them, as though they’re commands. ![]() The thought could also center on having sex with a family member, encountering dangerous germs, or doing something embarrassing in front of a lot of people. ![]() Or, they might be hanging out on the balcony when they abruptly think about jumping over it. Often, however, they appear spontaneously: someone might be holding a baby and suddenly imagine dropping him, Beadel says. Some research suggests that lack of sleep, stress, and anxiety can increase the frequency of intrusive thoughts. That makes them different from what’s commonly portrayed on TikTok: A quick thought about whether you should jump on stage as your favorite band plays probably won’t occur again, and likely won’t cause too much distress-unless you deeply value rule-following and are worried about what the idea says about you. ![]() ![]() ![]() Be aware that events are listed as Public or Private, limiting access to the general. ![]() In this proof-of-concept trial, we investigated effects of multi-domain evidence-based individually-tailored interventions on cognition, AD/cardiovascular risk scores, and AD-risk biomarkers in real-world clinical practice. 21, 22 APC’s mission is to mitigate late-life AD dementia risk by applying individualized clinical management strategies toward primary, secondary, and tertiary AD prevention while simultaneously studying its comparative effectiveness ( Figure S1). In 2013, an Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic (APC) was established in New York, with research collaboration in Puerto Rico. 20, 21 Patients are followed longitudinally to evaluate the effectiveness of, and further refine, personally-tailored interventions. 17, 18 A term that has been used to adapt this approach, using currently available clinical assessments in everyday practice, 19 is clinical precision medicine, where medical history (e.g., lifestyle patterns, life-course events), physical/neurological examination, anthropometrics, commercially-available blood biomarkers (including genetics), and cognitive assessments inform a multi-modal management plan. ![]() 16 An overall structure of how precision medicine may be achieved in the future will be through convergence of technological advances (e.g., big data, genomic sequencing, “-omics” technologies, systems biology, integrated disease modeling) as it is hypothesized that deconstructing the disease into multiple subsets that exist within a heterogeneous population, and tailoring therapies accordingly, may be preferentially effective based on individual biological make-up (protein-protein interactions, epigenetic modifications, metabolic pathways). 12, 15 The National Institutes of Health defines precision medicine as “an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person”. 14Ĭonsidering the heterogeneity of AD pathology, the application of precision medicine allows for interventions that can be targeted for individual patients. 12, 13 However, encouraging data from RCTs require translation to clinical practice, including verification of how patient compliance (or “dose response”) affects outcomes. ![]() 10, 11 Other RCTs applying lifestyle modifications have demonstrated similar effects in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) participants and adults at-risk for cognitive decline. 8, 9 The Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) study was the first large long-term randomized controlled trial (RCT) showing multi-domain interventions (nutrition/physical activity/cognitive training) can maintain cognitive function and reduce the risk of cognitive impairment among at-risk older adults from the general population. 7, 8 These targetable risk factors may influence AD pathological pathways (e.g., glucose hypometabolism, inflammation, oxidative stress, amyloid burden, trophic factors). Population-attributable risk models estimate that risk factor modification (e.g., hypertension, insulin resistance, physical inactivity, hearing loss, depression) may prevent up to one-third of AD cases. 6 It is therefore important to evaluate the effectiveness of AD interventions across the disease spectrum, especially in at-risk individuals before clinically-evident decline. Further, AD drug trials may have been more successful if initiated earlier in the disease course. Given the paucity of effective AD treatments, prevention or delay of dementia is essential. ![]() ![]() 1– 4 Considering over 46 million people in the United States alone have preclinical AD, this pre-dementia period offers a unique opportunity for early intervention to address modifiable risk. Late-life Alzheimer’s disease (AD) develops over an extended preclinical period. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tonneau Covered Customer: Alright, Peter. Low-Profile Design w/ an UV Protective Black Finish. The magnitude of carbon sequestration in such a grassland is yet to be determined, he notes. Hu says the implications are that grasslands can be carbon sinks - at least for the short term. They found a trend toward higher carbon content in the soil from plots given elevated carbon dioxide levels. Between 19, the researchers maintained two sets of open-top chambers at the grassland, one in which carbon dioxide levels were maintained at their normal level - 360 parts per million (ppm) - and one in which they were doubled to 720 ppm In 19, the scientists analyzed soil core samples from each of the plots. The results are from a five-year study conducted at an annual grassland on Stanford University’s Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve in central California. "Our data indicate that soil microbes quickly respond to changes in carbon and nitrogen availability and may play critical roles in determining the potential of grasslands - and other terrestrial ecosystems, too - to act as a carbon sink," Hu said.Ĭarbon sequestration occurs in an ecosystem when the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by growing plants is greater than the amount of the gas released by decomposing plant material. ![]() The research described in the Nature paper, however, identified a mechanism through which grassland soils can sequester carbon, and, in fact, found a trend toward increased soil carbon under elevated carbon dioxide conditions.
