![]() ![]() If the makers decide to go with a direct sequel immediately after this one, I am sure that a few seconds of that news footage gives us a fair idea of what that’s going to be about, before branching off into a shared universe as the next segment would suggest. This, however horrific in its realisation, is a seemingly diametrically opposite end you would expect from a ‘ Superman’ film, that we now know better to end on an optimistic and hopeful note, establishing ‘Brightburn’ as an almost complete antithesis of any of the ‘Superman’ films, from his origins, to internal struggles to finally being a man simply trying to do some good. ![]() Quickly flashing news sequences now dub him “Brightburn” and Brandon is shown committing acts of destruction with his powers, destroying buildings and killing hundreds of people, also on one instant burning his double B insignia on a field. While there is no overtly placed mid or post credits scene in ‘Brightburn’, a sequence of news clips accompanies the credits almost as soon as they start rolling, that both reveal what Brandon is up to now that virtually no one he knows would stand in the way of his world dominion. As the credits sequence of ‘Brightburn’ would suggest, a new shared universe is very well in the making, and ‘Brightburn’ could soon very well see a sequel or a spinoff to meet with this film at some point in the future. Naturally, that doesn’t mean that the makers of this one wouldn’t want to cash in on the perceived or even conceptual success of this one. It's not a great movie, it really didn't achieve the potential it could have grabbed at, but it's still a good time for a horror film that's a bit different.Regardless of the quality or success of the previous film, it’s a win-win, even if in showing other filmmakers the infinite number of possibilities within the realm of superheroes. Not to mention, without going into spoilers, the movie ended in a way I really didn't expect. Then when we do get to the superpowered killing, it is gritty and over-the-top in it's brutality in a grim and satisfying way. When people are approaching him in scenes not knowing he has powers too, there is a tension to knowing something they don't know. I actually really like the idea of the mother not being able to accept her child's turn, that felt really genuine and almost true to how I imagine parents of real killers must feel. Not perfect, not by a long shot, but still quite a bit of fun. ![]() As a slasher movie where the villain has powers though, it's really quite a bit of fun. It has a lot of opportunities, but it all happens too abruptly and it goes more for gritty fun than it does for any interesting insight. It turns out that even some inconsequential basic "facts" about Columbus' famed first voyage are problematic. The big question for Columbus, it turns out, was not the shape of the Earth but the size of the ocean he was planning to cross. Several books published in Europe between 12 discussed the Earth’s shape, including “The Sphere,” written in the early 1200s, which was required reading in European universities in the 1300s and beyond. Columbus in fact owned a copy of Ptolemy’s Geography, written at the height of the Roman Empire, 1,300 years before Chris Columbus set sail. That information was already a generally accepted fact among educated people of Columbus' time, and, in any case, Columbus didn't definitively establish it by circumnavigating the globe:Īs early as the sixth century B.C., Pythagoras - later followed by Aristotle and Euclid - wrote about Earth as a sphere, and historians say there is no doubt that the educated in Columbus’s day knew quite well that the Earth was round. And finally, Columbus certainly didn't " prove" the Earth was round, nor did he set out to do so. And even if Columbus had reached North America proper by ship at some point, it's unlikely he would have been the first person, or even the first European, to do so. During his first expedition (1492-93), Columbus' ships touched on various islands that we now know as the Bahamas, Cuba, and Hispaniola, i.e., the Dominican Republic and Haiti. At no time during any of his four voyages across the Atlantic did Christopher Columbus make landfall at, or set foot on, the North American continent. ![]() We're now more aware that much of that simple historical narrative is inaccurate. ![]() One of the primary historical "facts" many of us learned as schoolchildren was that "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue," and in three ships named the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, the intrepid Italian explorer -sponsored by Spanish monarchs - sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and "discovered America," in the process finally proving to the world that the Earth was round. ![]() ![]() ![]() Provide excellent customer service to clients and other stakeholders.Ensure compliance with accounting and financial regulations and policies.Collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate and timely reporting and analysis.Assist with other accounting and finance functions as needed.Maintain accurate and complete billing records and reports.Resolve billing issues, such as discrepancies or disputes, by communicating with clients and other stakeholders.Communicate with vendors and clients throughout the payment process. This diffraction element leads to a phenomenon known as Cellini’s halo (also known as the Heiligenschein effect) where a bright ring of light surrounds the shadow of the observer’s head.ĭiffraction of light plays a paramount role in limiting the resolving power of any optical instrument (for example: cameras, binoculars, telescopes, microscopes, and the eye). This last interaction with the interface refracts the light back into the atmosphere, but it also diffracts a portion of the light as illustrated below. The beam, still traveling inside the water droplet, is once again refracted as it strikes the interface for a third time. As a light wave traveling through the atmosphere encounters a droplet of water, as illustrated below, it is first refracted at the water-to-air interface, then it is reflected as it again encounters the interface. The amount of diffraction depends on the wavelength of light, with longer wavelengths being diffracted at a greater angle than shorter ones (in effect, red light are diffracted at a higher angle than is blue and violet light). ![]() We can often observe pastel shades of blue, pink, purple, and green in clouds that are generated when light is diffracted from water droplets in the clouds. ![]() A good example of this is the diffraction of sunlight by clouds that we often refer to as a silver lining, illustrated in Figure 1 with a beautiful sunset over the ocean. This phenomenon can also occur when light is “bent” around particles that are on the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of the light. The parallel lines are actually diffraction patterns. As the fingers approach each other and come very close together, you begin to see a series of dark lines parallel to the fingers. A very simple demonstration of diffraction of waves can be conducted by holding your hand in front of a light source and slowly closing two fingers while observing the light transmitted between them. ![]() ![]() ![]() She was inducted into Merck’s Hall of Fame in 2012, voted the District’s Most Valuable Player Award 14 times by her peers, and earned the Northeast Vaccine Region Award.
